Arbore robust, cu o coroană largă, rotundă sau în formă de evantai. Trunchiul este adesea slab ramificat, iar coroana semi-deschisă este formată din mai multe ramuri principale grele. Crenguțele tinere sunt maro lucios și au părul dens lânos în primul sezon. Scoarța veche este de culoare brună până la verde-cenușie și se desprinde în foi subțiri și plate. Frunzele de formă ovoidală până la alungită au marginea frunzei puternic zimțată, cu nervurile laterale care se prelungesc până la un vârf mic ca un fir. Foarte asemănător cu Z. serrata, dar are între 8 și 14 perechi de nervuri laterale pe frunză, în timp ce Z. sinica are între 7 și 12 perechi de nervuri laterale pe frunză.
