Arbore de talie medie spre mare, cu o coroană ovoidală largă și verticală, înalt de 8 până la 15 m. Crengile tinere subțiri sunt gri și glabre. Scoarța veche este, de asemenea, cenușie și mai târziu se desprinde în foițe, lăsând la vedere scoarța inferioară portocalie până la maro deschis. Frunza ușor încovoiată este oval-alungită până la eliptică-alungită și de culoare verde închis. Marginea frunzei este zimțată. Suprafața superioară este foarte aspru păroasă, iar cea inferioară este cenușie. Frunza este oarecum coroiată la atingere. În condiții favorabile, toamna poate deveni roșie-maronie.
