Crește de la o formă de arbust la un copac mic, uneori cu mai multe tulpini, cu o coroană rotundă. Pe crengi, sub fiecare mugure se află câte un spin plat. În scoarța bătrână, acești spini sunt uneori încă vizibili sub formă de cocoașe mici. Frunzele grațioase, ciudate și impare, sunt formate din 11 până la 21 de frunzulițe alungite-ovoidale de culoare verde închis. Marginile frunzelor au dinți fini și rotunjiți și vârfuri incizate. Fusul frunzelor este glabru și acoperit cu spini fini pe partea inferioară. Toamna, frunzele se îngălbenesc. Mănunchiurile compacte de flori verzi până la verde-maroniu se deschid în iulie și august. Acestea sunt urmate de fructe mici de culoare verde până la roșu-maroniu, globuloase, de tip cutie cărnoasă, care conțin semințe negre.
