Crește de la o formă de arbust la un copac mic, uneori cu mai multe tulpini, cu o coroană rotundă. Pe crengi, sub fiecare mugure sunt plasați doi spini. În scoarța veche, acești spini sunt uneori încă vizibile sub forma unor cocoașe mici.
