Acest ulm formează o coroană largă și aplatizată, cu ramuri care cresc în trepte, mai mult sau mai puțin orizontale. La capetele ramurilor (laterale), crengile sunt ușor căzute. Datorită ramificației dense, se formează o ramificație în formă de spini de hering. Înălțime 5 - 7 m și adesea de două ori mai lat. Scoarța de culoare gri închis rămâne netedă pentru o perioadă lungă de timp, formând ulterior caneluri puțin adânci. Crenguțele tinere sunt brun-cenușii și albicioase păroase, mai târziu ramurile devin cenușii. În mod caracteristic, frunzele sunt deosebit de apropiate la vârful ramurilor. Frunza mare este asimetrică, de culoare verde închis și aspru păroasă pe ambele fețe. Fața inferioară este verde deschis. Toamna, devine galbenă. Înainte ca frunzele să se dezvolte, florile de culoare brun-violet apar în mănunchiuri. Nucile înaripate sunt împrăștiate de vânt. Susceptibil la boala olandeză a ulmului.
