Arbore mare, de până la 20 m, cu o coroană în formă de vază, care mai târziu devine în formă de vază largă. Scoarța de culoare maro-cenușie este ușor canelată. Grote boom tot 20 m met een vaasvormige kroon die later breed vaasvormig wordt. De bruingrijze bast is iets gegroefd. Het blad is met een lengte van 3,5 tot 6 cm relatief klein. Het is omgekeerd eivormig en glanzend donkergroen. In de herfst kleurt het goudgeel tot bruingeel. De boom ontstond uit een kruising tussen Ulmus japonica, voorheen bekend als Ulmus davidiana var. japonica, en Ulmus wilsoniana. In 1924 verkreeg het Morton Arboretum zaad van het befaamde Arnold Arboretum in Massachusetts. Hieruit ontstond Ulmus 'Morton'.
