Vechiul cultivar "Rubra" este un arbore cu creștere lentă, cu o coroană conică largă și o înălțime de aproximativ 15 m. Pe trunchiul de culoare gri deschis, mai târziu canelat, există ramuri verticale în diagonală. Iarna, crengile devin de la roșu-portocaliu la roșu-corai.
