Arbore de mărime medie spre mare, cu o coroană piramidală care atinge 10-12 m înălțime. La o vârstă tânără, copacul are o ramificare destul de abruptă care îl menține îngust pentru o perioadă lungă de timp. Frunzele sunt în formă de inimă și au o dimensiune de 8 până la 15 cm. Este verde pe partea superioară și are peri moi de culoare alb-cenușie pe partea inferioară. Frunzele devin roșu-maroniu toamna și uneori rămân pe copac până la începutul iernii. Florile sunt dispuse împreună în corimbi pendulanți și se deschid în iunie și la începutul lunii iulie. Acestea sunt de culoare crem, puternic parfumate și atrag multe albine.
