Crește în mod natural în centrul Chinei, unde se dezvoltă de la un arbust la un copac de dimensiuni considerabile, cu o înălțime de până la 25 m. Din cauza sensibilității sale la îngheț, este puțin cultivat în Europa, unde crește până la 15 m înălțime. T. henryana are frunze foarte decorative, care sunt de culoare roz până la bronz închis atunci când se desfășoară.
