Arbust foarte mare sau copac mediu spre mare, cu o coroană largă, ovoidală sau rotundă. Crenguțele tinere sunt brun-roșcate, inițial păroase, mai târziu purpurii închis și goale până la ușor solzoase. Scoarța arborilor mai bătrâni este cenușie și netedă. Frunzele mari sunt aproape rotunde, cu un vârf ascuțit vizibil. Acestea sunt de culoare verde închis. Cele două frunze inferioare ale fiecărui lăstar sunt aproape opuse una față de cealaltă. Restul frunzelor sunt împrăștiate de-a lungul ramurii. Baza frunzelor este lărgită, concavă și înconjoară mugurul. Florile se deschid în iunie și atârnă în ciorchini lungi.
