Oarecum variabilă, de la arbust mare la arbore de talie medie, cu o coroană largă piramidală până la ovală, cu o înălțime de 10-15 m. Crengile tinere sunt de culoare maro-gălbuie până la maro, iar scoarța mai veche este gri închis, ușor canelată mai târziu, dezvăluind o scoarță inferioară portocalie. Frunzele sunt foarte variabile ca formă și mărime. De la ovale la alungite-ovale sau în formă de romb și cu o lungime de 3 până la 11 cm. Sunt verzi lucioase și abia se decolorează toamna. Florile atârnă în ciorchini pe ramuri laterale scurte și se deschid în iunie și iulie. Acestea măsoară între 1,5 și 2,5 cm și sunt albe cu stamine galbene. Au un parfum puternic și plăcut. Această specie înflorește de obicei foarte abundent și este apoi puternic favorizată de albine. Florile sunt urmate de drupe tari, ovoidale, de culoare verde-cenușie, cu un caliciu verde închis.
