Acesta este un hibrid foarte frapant, a cărui origine este necunoscută. Arborele crește în formă de piramidă îngustă până la o înălțime de aproximativ 8 m și este foarte compact. Frunzele de până la aproximativ 16 cm sunt inegale, penate și sunt formate din 15 - 19 foliole ovoidale, înguste și inversate. Toamna se colorează în roșu-portocaliu spre purpuriu și, împreună cu fructele impresionante, aceasta constituie principala valoare ornamentală. La început, fructele sunt încă galben-crem, dar mai târziu devin galben-închis spre chihlimbar. 'Joseph Rock' are o rodire foarte variabilă.
