Acest copac mic are o coroană deschisă, cu ramuri drepte și robuste. Nu formează o ramură de inimă, ceea ce face ca forma coroanei să fie larg ovoidală. Crenguțele tinere sunt goale și strălucitoare, de culoare roșie-maronie. Frunzele impare, cu penițe impare, sunt formate din 11 - 17 foliole lanceolate până la alungite, iar frunzele de susținere sunt lungi. Marginea frunzelor este zimțată, cu excepția bazei, unde este întreagă. S. discolor are frunzele de culoare verde închisă, cu un fond albastru-verzui. Toamna devine roșu intens.
