Este originar din America de Nord și crește acolo ca un arbore, atingând o înălțime de 6-8 m și o lățime de aproximativ 4-5 m. Coroana este compactă și formată din ramuri rigide și drepte. Frunzele sunt neuniform penate și au o tulpină de culoare roșu închis. Frunzele parțiale au o lungime de 3 - 8 cm și o formă eliptică până la alungită.
