Arbust robust până la arbore mic, cu coroana sferică, de obicei nu mai înalt de 5 m. Crengile tinere sunt de culoare verde-cenușie și cenușie-feliată în primii doi ani. O scoarță mai bătrână este cenușie-maronie și netedă, cu caneluri longitudinale puțin adânci în viața ulterioară. Frunzele sunt de la eliptice la lanceolate inversate. Suprafața superioară este de un verde ușor mat și cu părul foarte scurt. Fața inferioară este dens pătată de gri. Frunzele de susținere în formă de semicerc rămân la baza frunzei pe tot parcursul sezonului. Catelul se coace în aprilie. Cătinii masculi au o lungime de aproximativ 5 cm și sunt de culoare galben-verzuie. În faza de fructificare, cătinii femelei sunt maro deschis și au o lungime de aproximativ 8 cm.
