Arbore remarcabil, cu o coroană rotundă și o înălțime cuprinsă între 6 și 10 (12) m. Trunchiul de culoare galben-brun până la gri este adânc striat de corcodușe. Crengile tinere sunt galben-maronii și foarte flexibile. Frunzele lanceolate sunt în mod vizibil alb-argintiu și cu părul păros pe ambele fețe. Această pilozitate rămâne prezentă toată vara, dând copacului o culoare gri-argintiu izbitoare, mai ales de la distanță. Frunzele cad abia toamna târziu, uneori abia la începutul lunii decembrie. Cătinii galbeni apar simultan cu frunzele. Creșterea rădăcinilor este superficială, cu foarte multe rădăcini păroase. Crește în locuri umede și poate fi scufundat temporar în apă, dar prosperă și în locuri mai uscate. Din punct de vedere morfologic, planta seamănă foarte mult cu S. alba.
