Salcia comună este o salcie ornamentală cu creștere rapidă, cu o coroană ovală. Se lărgește mai târziu, cu ramuri în relief. Adesea utilizată ca salcie polenizată în peisaj, rămâne semnificativ mai joasă. Trunchiul de culoare galben-brun spre gri este canelat și ușor cornos. Crenguțele tinere sunt galben-maronii și foarte flexibile, sunt adesea folosite pentru împletituri și coșuri. Frunzele lanceolate sunt de culoare verde închis și ușor lucioase în partea superioară. Partea inferioară este de culoare verde-albastră. Ambele fețe sunt ușor păroase, cu fire mici de păr argintiu. Cătinii galbeni apar simultan cu frunzele. Creșterea rădăcinilor este superficială, cu foarte multe rădăcini păroase. Salix alba este un important producător de lemn pentru placaj, jucării, saboți și cutii, printre altele, și are o mare varietate de soiuri. Crește în locuri umede și poate fi temporar inundat, dar se dezvoltă în continuare în locuri mai uscate.
