Quercus velutina este o specie americană cu o formă oarecum asemănătoare cu Q. rubra. Este un arbore mare, cu un trunchi bine distanțat, cu o înălțime de până la aproximativ 30 m. Scoarța este de culoare gri închis, rămâne netedă pentru o perioadă lungă de timp, dar în cele din urmă dezvoltă caneluri puțin adânci. Scoarța interioară este de un galben-portocaliu izbitor. Din aceasta se extrăgea în trecut un colorant galben. Crengile tinere sunt de culoare verde măsliniu spre maro și sunt ușor păroase. Crengile mai bătrâne sunt brun-roșcate. Mugurii de frunze, în special cei terminali, au o dimensiune de aproximativ 1 cm și prezintă solzi păroși de muguri. Frunzele au vârful în formă de pană, iar lobii frunzelor sunt dințoși grosolan și au vârful ascuțit. Suprafața superioară a frunzei este verde închis lucios, iar cea inferioară este verde deschis și este împânzită de fire de păr stelat maro deschis. Culorile de toamnă sunt de la portocaliu la brun-roșcat. Frunza este remarcabil de rigidă, scoțând în vânt un sunet de "tinichea". De aici provine numele olandez al copacului.
