În sudul Europei și în Maroc, crește de la arbust stufos la copac mic, cu un trunchi strâmb și ramificații joase. În cultură, crește adesea ca un arbore mic cu un singur tulpină. Forma coroanei este semideschisă și neregulată. Crengile tinere sunt cenușii pufoase, mai târziu netede și de culoare verde-oliv. Sunt subțiri și arcuite. Frunzele sunt de dimensiuni variabile, cu o lungime de 10 - 18 cm și o lățime de 3,5 - 10 cm. Pe ambele fețe prezintă peri pufoși de culoare galben-cenușie. Pe partea inferioară, firele de păr sunt permanente. Marginea frunzei este adânc lobată cu pene, iar lobii sunt dințoși fără vârf. Ghindele sunt 2 - 4 împreună și sunt de formă oval-alungită. Jumătate sunt înconjurate de cupa care este ocupată de solzi adiacenți lungi, asemănători cu pâslă. Necesită un loc cald, însorit și adăpostit.
