Arbore columnar frumos, care prezintă o coroană îngustă și închisă chiar și la o vârstă mai înaintată. Arborele are o coroană foarte uniformă până la o înălțime de 12-18 m, crescând nu mai mult de 3,5-4,5 m. Datorită faptului că ramurile sunt plantate la un unghi de 20-25° față de trunchi, se menține obiceiul îngust. Ramificarea este densă, iar crengile tinere sunt de culoare verde-oliv. Ramurile mai bătrâne și scoarța sunt de culoare gri. Scoarța este netedă până la puțin adânc canelată. Frunzele cu lobi grosieri sunt de culoare verde închis lucios, devenind roșii sau brun-roșcate toamna. Iarna, arborele păstrează destul de multe frunze ofilite. A fost găsit ca răsad de Q. palustris 'Crownright'. Obiceiul său de creștere columnar îl face foarte potrivit pentru utilizarea pe străzile înguste, în curțile rezidențiale și în piețe. Crește cel mai bine în soluri destul de acide și poate suporta și solul umed. Tolerează poluarea aerului.
