Un copac cu creștere destul de rapidă, cu un trunchi principal drept și o poziție orizontală frumoasă a ramurilor. Ramurile inferioare se pot lăsa ușor în timp, ceea ce este foarte caracteristic pentru această specie. Trunchiurile vechi au caneluri puțin adânci. De asemenea, sunt caracteristice numeroasele crenguțe scurte distribuite pe trunchi și ramurile grele ale tulpinii. Frunza are o formă oarecum variabilă, de la ovală la ovală, cu lungimea de 7 - 15 cm și uneori la fel de lată. Este grosier lobată, cu 2 până la 4 perechi de lobi cu dinți ascuțiți.
