Soiul "Mauri" este o încrucișare între Q. rubra și Q. coccinea sau Q. palustris. Obiceiul de creștere este piramidal îngust, iar arborele are o înălțime de 20 - 25 m la o lățime de aproximativ 5 - 7 m. Scoarța gri rămâne netedă pentru o perioadă lungă de timp, trunchiurile vechi dobândesc plăci subțiri de scoarță gri închis. Crengile tinere sunt goale și lucioase de culoare brun-roșcată. Frunzele sunt ovale până la ovoid inversat și incizate până la jumătate. De obicei, cu 6 până la 8 perechi de lobi grosieri, care sunt triunghiulare și puternic dințate.
