Hibrid natural între Q. phellos și Q. rubra, care apare acolo unde apar ambele specii. Formează un arbore mare de foioase cu coroana ovoidală până la rotundă, cu o înălțime de aproximativ 20 m. Scoarța este cenușie și netedă până la o vârstă considerabilă. Doar la arborii mai bătrâni, scoarța devine ușor aspră. Frunzele au o formă foarte variabilă, de la lanceolată la ovală. De obicei, cea mai mare lățime este deasupra centrului. Este întreagă sau cu 3 până la 5 dinți pe fiecare parte. Suprafața superioară este verde lucios și glabra. Fața inferioară este mai deschisă și este păroasă doar în dreptul nervurilor. Toamna, frunzele devin roșiatice sau brun-roșcate. Se formează puține ghinde. Acestea sunt asemănătoare cu cele de la Q. rubra. Un arbore sănătos și rezistent, care se dezvoltă și pe soluri mai sărace, cu condiția ca acestea să fie suficient de umede și nu prea calcaroase.
