Arbore sănătos și puțin pretențios, cu o coroană piramidală îngustă. Înălțime 9 - 12 m. Lățime până la aproximativ 5 - 7 m. Trunchiul arborilor bătrâni este de culoare gri închis până la aproape negru, profund canelat și desprins în părți mici. Crengile tinere sunt ușor păroase, dar devin curând goale. Acestea devin gri-maronii și uneori au spini. Frunzele sunt ovale până la eliptice și de culoare verde strălucitor, cu marginea frunzelor dințată ascuțit. Culoarea de toamnă este de la roșu-portocaliu la roșu-gălbui. În aprilie apare înflorirea abundentă de flori albe pure.
