Arbust de mari dimensiuni care, adesea cu mai multe tulpini și cu o creștere întinse, se transformă în copac. Inițial, se întâlnește pe pantele muntoase stufoase din Japonia și China. Scoarța gri-maronie, aromată, are o formă ușor reticulară și se desprinde în fulgi. Crengile sunt inițial păroase, dar mai târziu sunt goale. Frunzele mari, ovoidale până la ovale, sunt ascuțite. Suprafața superioară este verde proaspăt, iar cea inferioară este verde-cenușie. Florile albe, în formă de clopot, cu diametrul de aproximativ 1 cm, apar în iunie/iulie.
