Crește în mod natural pe pante stâncoase uscate în zonele muntoase din estul Americii de Nord și Mexic. Coroana lejeră este rotundă și deschisă, iar planta este aromată în toate părțile. Scoarța netedă este de culoare gri-maronie, ulterior ușor canelată și ușor solzoasă. Crenguțele anuale sunt verzi, iar cele bătrâne sunt galben-maronii. Frunzele sunt trilobate și parfumate. Culoarea de toamnă este galbenă. Florile mici, discrete, cresc în panicule mari de până la 8 cm și sunt deosebit de parfumate seara.
