Crește de la o formă de arbust stufos la un copac de dimensiuni mici sau medii, cu ramificații foarte dense și o coroană rotundă. În sălbăticie, copacul poate atinge o înălțime de aproximativ 20 m, dar în cultură rămâne semnificativ mai mic. Crengile tinere au o culoare purpurie izbitoare, care contrastează bine cu frunzele lucioase de culoare verde închis. Frunzele sunt lucioase la atingere.
