Un copac mare, adesea întâlnit în sălbăticie sub formă de arbust cu mai multe tulpini. Are o coroană largă, ovoidală până la rotundă, cu o înălțime de 15 - 20 m. Frunzele verzi, ovoidale, alungite, au o dimensiune de 6 - 15 cm și o culoare galben-roșie toamna. Arborele înflorește în aprilie cu ciorchini de flori mari, simple, albe, de 3 - 3,5 cm.
