Un copac mare cu coroana inițial conică, devenind mai târziu ovală sau rotundă, mai alungită. Scoarța este de culoare gri deschis și rămâne netedă pentru o perioadă lungă de timp, iar crengile tinere sunt galben-maronii, lucioase și oarecum căzute. Frunzele largi, de formă ovoidală până la rotundă, sunt de culoare verde închis cu partea inferioară mai deschisă, iar marginea frunzelor este ondulată până la dințată grosier. Toamna se îngălbenește. În mod caracteristic, frunzele scot un sunet de foșnet atunci când bate vântul. Arborele este dioic. Potrivit pentru peisaj și plantații în rânduri.
