Se crede că provine dintr-o încrucișare între P. alba și P. tremula. Asemănarea cu P. alba este deosebit de puternică. Un arbore mare, cu creștere rapidă, cu coroana de la liberă la densă și trunchi sinuos. Trunchiul este de culoare verde-cenușiu deschis, uneori aproape alb, cu dungi negre orizontale. Crenguțele și mugurii sunt de culoare gri-feliată. Frunzele triunghiulare până la ovoidale sunt de culoare verde închis lucios, cu partea inferioară cenușie și fetru și cu o margine grosier dințată sau lobată. Au o lungime de aproximativ 5 - 12 cm și o lățime de 4 - 9 cm. Toamna sunt de culoare galben-verde. P. x canescens este potrivit pentru zonele amenajate și ca solitar în parcuri și canale. Preferă solul umed, bogat în nutrienți, dar crește și pe soluri mai uscate, mai puțin bogate în nutrienți. Nu tolerează solurile turbate sau acide. Rezistent bine la vânt (mare).
