Ca un copac tânăr, încă îngust de drept, mai târziu se formează o coroană conică, moderat de largă. Trunchiul drept este ramificat în mod regulat de ramuri foarte drepte. Arborele poate atinge o înălțime de 30 - 35 m. Scoarța este alb-cenușie și subțire, cu caneluri aspre la baza trunchiului. Frunza de formă triunghiulară până la rombică are o bază dreaptă. Ea răsare devreme și apoi are o culoare roșie-maronie. Vara este verde și devine galben-verzuie toamna. Arborele înflorește cu catrințe masculine. Foarte sensibil la rugină, dar puțin sensibil la boala de pătare a frunzelor și la caniculă. Potrivit pentru zonele de coastă datorită rezistenței sale bune la vânt. Arborele este folosit și pentru amenajări peisagistice și plantații urbane. 'Robusta' preferă solurile fertile, argiloase și umede, este sensibil la secetă și îngheț și este un bun producător de lemn. Populus x canadensis 'Robusta' are un trunchi cu creștere dreaptă, cu o ramură centrală continuă. Baza trunchiului este aspru canelată, dar mai sus în copac, scoarța rămâne netedă.
