Arbore cu creștere rapidă care seamănă mult cu P. x acerifolia, dar este mai predispus la îngheț în tinerețe. Formează unul dintre cei mai mari arbori din arealul său natural din centrul și estul Statelor Unite. Scoarța se desprinde în mici secțiuni gri deschis. Trunchiurile bătrâne devin gri-maronii. Frunza lată are de obicei 3 (uneori 5) lobi dințoși. Toamna, aceasta devine galben-maronie. Frunzele căzute se descompun greu și rămân în jurul copacului pentru o perioadă lungă de timp.
