Se deosebește de toți ceilalți platani prin frunzele sale pestrițe. Crește mai încet decât specia și va deveni în cele din urmă un arbore oval lat, înalt de 8 până la 15 m. Frunzele devin de la roz verzui moale la verde pal. Vara, este verde și puternic marmorat și pătat cu alb-crem. Toamna, frunzele devin galben-maronii. Frunzele căzute se descompun slab. Inflorescențele globuloase atârnă în perechi pe tulpini lungi din care apar mai târziu fructele spinoase. Acestea rămân pe copac până în timpul iernii.
