Crenguțele și ramurile care cresc aproape perpendicular în sus creează un copac columnar foarte subțire. La o vârstă fragedă, creșterea poate fi oarecum lentă, dar după aceea copacul poate crește relativ repede până la o înălțime de 15 m. Crengile sunt de un maro-portocaliu izbitor. Scoarța veche este gri-maronie și se desprinde în benzi grosiere. Acele robuste, destul de scurte, sunt ușor răsucite și au o lungime de 3 până la 6 cm. Ele stau împreună în mănunchiuri de câte două și sunt de culoare verde-albastră. Conurile de culoare gri-maronie atârnă singure sau în spirale de 2 până la 5.
