Frumos copac mare și impunător, cu o formă frumoasă a coroanei și o scoarță distinctivă. La fel ca și specia (P. nigra subsp. nigra), poate fi aplicat ca un arbore cu ramuri joase sau cu coroană. Dacă este liber, ramurile rămân pline până la bază. Când este tânăr, coroana este îngust piramidală și își păstrează această formă pentru o perioadă lungă de timp. Abia mai târziu în viață copacul se va lărgi. Scoarța de culoare neagră-cenușie este profund canelată și foarte decorativă la arborii mai bătrâni. Acele sunt întotdeauna în mănunchiuri de câte două pe crengile galben-maronii. Acestea sunt de culoare verde foarte închis, rigide și ușor înjunghiate. Conurile desprinse, de culoare maro deschis, atârnă în perechi de câte doi sau singure. La fel ca și specia, "Pyramidalis" este potrivit pentru multe tipuri de sol și crește și în soluri calcaroase uscate. Rezistent la briza mării și insensibil la poluarea aerului.
