Arbore mare, cu o coroană semidensă, larg conică, mai aplatizată la maturitate. Crește moderat de repede, cu o poziție orizontală a ramurilor. În habitatul său natural, arborele poate ajunge până la aproximativ 50 m înălțime. Scoarța este brun-neagră, mai târziu canelată cu plăci libere și de culoare brun-violetă. Când sunt tăiate, crengile netede și mai târziu lucioase miros a portocale. Acele răsucite sunt destul de rigide, drepte și țepoase.
