Picea abies "Nidiformis" este un soi arbustiv care, după mulți ani, poate atinge o înălțime de 2-3 m și un diametru de peste 4 m. Inițial, planta are o formă sferică, mai târziu, în cursul vieții, coroana va fi mai aplatizată până la forma unui cuib, cu centrul plantei mai jos decât marginile coroanei. Crenguțele tinere sunt brun-roșcate, cele mai bătrâne și trunchiul sunt gri. Acele sunt de culoare verde închis până la verde-albastru închis. Cu ajutorul unei lupe, se poate observa că marginile acelor au o serie de dinți foarte mici, ceea ce reprezintă o caracteristică care distinge "Nidiformis". Conurile se formează doar sporadic.
