Arbore cu un trunchi robust, cu creștere dreaptă, pe care se găsesc ramuri largi care formează o coroană în formă de evantai, eventual rotundă. Phellodendron japonicum rămâne mai mic decât P. amurense și are o scoarță mai subțire. Aceasta este de culoare maro-cenușie și dezvoltă caneluri fine, formând mai târziu mici plăci de scoarță. Ramurile se transformă de la maro roșiatic la maro uniform. Frunzele, asemănătoare pâslei, neuniform penate, sunt formate din foliole ovoidale cu vârful ascuțit și au o lungime de 7 - 12 cm. Toamna se îngălbenește și este mai persistentă decât la P. amurense. Paniculele de flori verzui sunt pufoase și au o lungime și o lățime de aproximativ 8 - 9 cm.
