Crește inițial în nord-estul Asiei, în bazinul râului Amur, de la care arborele își ia numele. Este un arbore cu creștere rapidă, care se ramifică jos pe trunchi, cu ramuri de tulpină grele. Scoarța este groasă, corcodușită și profund canelată. Crenguțele tinere sunt groase și galben-maronii; ramurile mai bătrâne capătă un înveliș cornos. Frunzele verzi lucioase, neuniform penate, sunt compuse din 7 - 11 frunze parțiale lungi, ovoidale până la ovale, care au o lungime de 5 - 10 cm și un vârf ascuțit. Când sunt frecate, frunzele emană un parfum aromat. Culoarea de toamnă este galbenă, iar frunzele cad devreme în sezon. Paniculele de flori galben-verzui sunt urmate de boabe cărnoase care se transformă din roșu-negru în negru și rămân pe copac toată iarna. Plantele tinere sunt oarecum sensibile la îngheț.
