Originar din cea mai mare parte a Americii de Nord, unde este un producător popular de lemn de esență tare ("lemn de fier"). Ramificația sa foarte joasă este izbitoare: trunchiul nu depășește adesea jumătate de metru în înălțime. Ramurile laterale căzute formează în cele din urmă o coroană colosală. Trunchiul scurt este de culoare gri-maronie, canelat și desprins în plăci înguste și mici. La arborii mai bătrâni devine din ce în ce mai întunecat. Crengile tinere sunt păroase, iar mai târziu sunt goale. Frunzele lungi, ovoidale până la ovale, au marginea frunzelor dublu zimțată și devin de un galben izbitor toamna. Baza frunzei este mai mult în formă de inimă decât la O. carpinifolia. Înflorire cu catrințe masculine de culoare galben-verzui, lungi de 4-5 cm, și flori feminine în spițe mici.
