Arbore de talie medie, cu o coroană larg piramidală până la larg ovoidală, înalt de 10-15 m. La o vârstă mai înaintată, ramurile cad puternic, permițând coroanei să devină mai largă și aproape rotundă. Frunzele lucioase de culoare verde închis sunt ovale până la ovoid inversat și sunt cu o fracțiune mai mari decât cele ale speciei. Frunzele tinere sunt de culoare roșie-portocalie până la roșie și se detașează frumos pe fondul verde închis al frunzelor adulte. Toamna, acestea devin din nou portocaliu închis spre roșu închis timp de câteva săptămâni.
