O specie originară din Japonia care este folosită mai mult pentru frunzele sale decorative decât pentru flori sau fructe. Are o creștere verticală, cu o tulpină principală dreaptă. Mugurii de iarnă sunt de un roșu-maroniu izbitor și strălucitori. Primăvara, frunzele tinere răsar aproape albe. Odată ajunse la maturitate, doar partea inferioară rămâne de un gri deschis izbitor. Frunzele sunt aspre și slab lobate. Niciun alt măr de crab nu are o coloristică de toamnă atât de specială ca acesta. În mai multe nuanțe, de la violet și cupru, trecând prin portocaliu până la galben, este o atracție pentru ochi toamna. Înflorirea (parfumată) și fructificarea sunt semnificativ mai puține decât în cazul altor mere ornamentale. Crește cel mai bine într-un sol bogat în nutrienți, nu prea uscat și are rădăcini superficiale, cu un sistem radicular viguros.
