Mărul de crab este un arbore mic originar din Europa. Este un copac cu o creștere oarecum neregulată, cu o coroană destul de liberă și rotundă. Scoarța este cenușie și se desprinde ulterior în plăci mici. Uneori, crengile tinere de culoare roșie-maronie sunt spinoase. Frunzele ovoidale până la ovale sunt de culoare verde lucios.
