Arbore robust, cu mai multe tulpini, cu o coroană liberă, cu creștere largă și scoarță netedă de culoare gri. Crengile de culoare brun-violet au un strat subțire de ceară și au muguri de culoare maro-violet. Frunzele ovoidale inversate sunt deosebit de mari, de până la 40-50 cm, iar suprafața superioară este lucioasă și de un verde proaspăt. Partea inferioară a frunzelor tinere este verde-cenușiu deschis și ușor păroasă. Florile alb-crem, în formă de bol, apar vara și sunt mai verticale decât la M. hypoleuca. Petalele de culoare alb-crem au o lungime de 10 - 12 cm. Staminele lungi sunt purpurii la bază. Florile emană un miros ușor, oarecum neplăcut și sunt urmate de fructe ovoidale, de culoare roșu-violet, cu o dimensiune de aproximativ 10 cm. Fructele conțin semințe purpurii. După ani de zile, un solitar frumos care necesită mult spațiu.
