Arbore robust, adesea cu mai multe tulpini, cu o coroană largă, cu creștere liberă și cu o scoarță netedă care se transformă de la maro deschis la gri. Crenguțele de culoare verde închis până la maro-violet au lenticele gri și muguri de culoare maro-violet închis. Frunzele ovoidale inversate sunt foarte mari, de până la 40-45 cm. Suprafața superioară este lucioasă și de un verde proaspăt, în timp ce partea inferioară este izbitor de mată de albastru deschis. Florile alb-cremă apar la începutul verii, atingând un diametru de până la 20 cm. Petalele alb-crem sunt uneori verzui sau roșu-violet. Staminele sunt izbitor de roșii la bază. Florile au un parfum puternic și plăcut de pepene galben. Acestea sunt urmate de fructe alungite, de culoare roșie-violetă, cu cutie compusă, care măsoară 12 - 17 cm.
