Arbore de talie medie, cu o coroană ovoidală largă de până la aproximativ 9 m. Această înălțime este atinsă numai după mulți ani. În sălbăticie, arborele poate ajunge la peste 15 m înălțime. Crengile tinere sunt inițial păroase, dar goale după primul sezon. Scoarța veche este gri-maronie și aspră la atingere. Florile mari, în formă de vază, sunt oarecum variabile ca formă și culoare. Lățimea petalelor variază. De obicei, florile sunt de un alb pur, dar există și forme complet sau parțial roz pal. Acestea au un parfum dulce-acrișor încântător.
