Arbore mare cu trunchiul care crește drept în sus și cu ramuri laterale care atârnă grațios în jos. Scoarța cenușie este profund canelată. Crenguțele tinere sunt de culoare verde deschis și dezvoltă de timpuriu crestături cornoase grele. Frunza are 5 lobi și este verde lucios. Toamna, aceasta devine galben închis spre portocaliu. Florile sunt discrete și sunt urmate de fructe rotunde, spinoase, de cutie, care rămân pe copac în timpul iernii. Formă curioasă descrisă de Alfred Rehder de la Arnold Arboretum din Statele Unite, de la un arbore găsit în Arkansas. A fost comercializat în jurul anului 1938.
