Arbore mare, cu o coroană largă, piramidală, destul de deschisă. Scoarța cenușie este profund canelată. Crenguțele tinere sunt de culoare verde deschis și au crestături cornoase care rămân pe ramuri până mai târziu în viață. Ramurile bienale sunt de culoare brun-roșiatică. Frunzele devin roșu vin închis până la roșu-negru cu nuanțe galbene toamna. Fructele rotunde de cutie spinoasă rămân pe copac în timpul iernii.
