Arbore puternic, cu o coroană piramidală dens ramificată, inițial îngustă și cu o ramură de inimă continuă și dreaptă. Mai târziu în viață, ramurile încep să cedeze mai mult, făcând coroana ovoidală. Scoarța cenușie este profund canelată. Crenguțele tinere sunt de culoare verde deschis și după numai câțiva ani sunt acoperite cu creste cornoase proeminente. Frunza are 5 lobi și este verde lucios.
