Arbust stufos până la copac mic, care formează o coroană ovoidală deosebit de dens ramificată, cu ramuri în relief. Trunchiul devine gri și este canelat. Crenguțele tinere sunt galben-verzi, care se transformă în roșu-brun. Ramurile mai bătrâne dezvoltă creste cornoase. Frunza cu 5 lobi este mai mică și mai lată decât cea a L. styraciflua și, de asemenea, mai adânc lobată până la despicătură. Marginea frunzei este, de asemenea, lobată. Frunza are o lungime de 4,5 - 7,5 cm și o lățime de 7 - 10 cm. Toamna devine roșie. După o înflorire discretă, apar fructele mari de aproximativ 2,5 cm, de culoare maro cu cutie. Acestea sunt înțepătoare, atârnă pe tulpini lungi și subțiri și rămân pe copac până bine în timpul iernii.
